Lloydminster finalist to host Dallas Smith concert

Jul 8, 2022 | 5:00 AM

The Border City is a possible destination for a fall concert featuring Country music star Dallas Smith.

Lloydminster is one of four Western Canadian finalists on track to host the concert presented by SiriusXM’s Music Town, a contest to bring once-in-a-lifetime concerts to communities that don’t typically get to present big festivals or artists.

The City was shortlisted as one of the top 16 finalists, following nominations from over 400 unique towns across the nation. Other western finalists include Estevan, Sylvan Lake, Alta., and Nanaimo, BC.

Among the nomination highlights from the community were an appeal to give residents great music to come after the summer, the amount of city pride in the area and the issue of attracting an event of this size, given the Border City’s placement between Edmonton and Saskatoon.

“With the downturn, I have to say Lloydminster has still been an amazing town with helping each other out whenever and wherever they can,” one nomination author said. “What’s a better way than to say thank you and to continue bringing the spirit to the town.”

Tracy Simpson, Executive Manager of Community Development Services for the City, applauded the Lloydminster community for supporting efforts to showcase the Border City on a national stage.

“Recently, Lloydminster ranked third in the province and eighth in the country in the participACTION Community Better Challenge, in an ongoing effort to win $100,000 to help enhance accessibility at Lloydminster Place,” she said. “Lloydminster’s dedication goes beyond the general community spirit. Our community is always there within seconds of a family or person in need.”

Now until July 11 (11:59 pm EDT), Lloydminster residents and neighbouring communities can cast their votes for the city and help earn points through unlimited social media actions. Judging is based on nomination stories and the total number of votes and rally points earned during the voting period.

“Let’s band together once again and win the Sirius XM Music Town and give back to the residents and businesses that give so much to Lloydminster,” Simpson said.

Jackie Tomayer, GM of the Lloydminster Exhibition Association, added that they’d be excited to partner with the City to host this concert locally.

“Lloydminster has proven that we like to have a party and this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience!” she said. “The Board and staff here at Lloyd Ex would love to host Sirius XM and Dallas Smith and do what we do best hosting a great live music experience.”

Smith is a multiple JUNO and CCMA award-winner and the reigning three-time CCMA Entertainer of the Year and the only Canadian country artist with 12 chart-topping singles. Other names headlining Music Town include Arkells, Walk off the Earth, and 2Frères.

Each winning city or town will be announced on July 14. Voting can be done here.
