Canada Day events scheduled across Northwest region

For those outside of areas like Maidstone and Meadow Lake, there are other Canada Day festivities in the region.

The City of Lloydminster is holding its first large-scale gathering on July 1 since 2019, with a full day of entertainment ahead. Things will kick off at the Amphitheatre Main Stage at 1:00 p.m., with the schedule including opening ceremonies, Indigenous dignitaries, and various singing and dance groups before culminating with the Dirt Rich band at 7:00 p.m.

Cindy Rekimowich, General Manager of Parks and Recreation in Lloydminster, said they were able to host virtual activities the previous year, along with a scavenger hunt and fireworks. Now with restrictions lifted, they’re expecting a lot more of the community to be present.

“We’re back to a regular event, so it will be exciting,” she said. “People are ready.”

A freestyle motorcycle stunt show will be the main attraction in the afternoon and early evening, but there are many other features for families to attend throughout the day.

An animal attraction zone, adventure zone, food vendors, farmers market,” Rekimowich said. “And we’ll end the night with fireworks.”

Full details on schedules, parking and more are available on the City’s website.

Canada Day at the beach

Families further north in the region but outside of Meadow Lake may be heading to Brightsand Lake Regional Park. Following restrictions affecting the festivities last year, the park is bringing back annual traditions for the area, which will include residents from areas like St. Walburg.

Heather Moellenbeck, Manager at Brightsand Lake Regional Park, said most of the day will be centred on the afternoon, with lunch and cake, face painting, a scavenger hunt and more.

“Everyone is welcome and it should be a good turnout if the weather cooperates,” she said.

Other annual activities include a money pit and rubber duck race. Molellenbeck said the latter has long been a children’s favourite.

There’s a creek that goes into the lake,” she said. “So, we have it set up that the ducks go into the creek and race down into the lake.”

Concession at the Lake will stay open later than normal for the evening, with fireworks by the beach capping off the day.

Emergency services spearhead festivities

For those in the southwest portion of the region, Cut Knife will have some Canada Day fun.

The local fire department and RCMP detachments are teaming up to put on an event. A dunk tank will be set up along with various outdoor games for families.

Town Administrator Preston Olson said this is the first event for the holiday since 2019. While residents have been slowly returning to pre-pandemic normalcy, Olson said this might become a breakthrough.

Fire association and RCMP are doing a Canada day event, dunk tank, games and other activities for children,” he said.

“At Christmas time we had ‘Light up Cut Knife’ which had a good turnout,” he said. “But this will be the first really big community event in Cut Knife since then.”

As with all Canada Day celebrations, fireworks will cap off the entertainment.
