Unique celebration

Maidstone adding to annual Canada Day festivities

Communities across Saskatchewan are set to celebrate on July 1, but few are as excited as Maidstone.

The town is set to hold its Canada Day Parade at 10:00 a.m., a yearly tradition in the community. Following the procession down Main Street, numerous events are scheduled over the course of the day, culminating in a fireworks show at around 11:00 p.m. at Delfrari-Victoria Park.

Megan Young, Financial Services Clerk for the Town of Maidstone, said the community prioritizes festivities on this holiday more than most.

“The parade is great, it’s a wonderful community thing, everyone gets on board with Canada Day,” she said. “We have stuff throughout the year, like street fest, school events and tournaments, but this is definitely a big deal.”

Among the procession will be a number of youthful cyclists.

“Kids decorate bikes and get to ride along and get prizes, which they always enjoy,” Young said.

Several partners are involved in making the day go, with the festivities starting at 8:00 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at Legion Hall. Various displays of food are available, including the concession outside the Maidstone Museum, where there will also be musical entertainment, Girl Guide organized games and a blacksmith demonstration.

Young noted that the Kin Club of Maidstone in particular is involved.

“It’s only the second year of Kin Club being in Maidstone,” she said. “They’ve done so much already, it’s been amazing.”

A community scavenger hunt is also set to take place, with adults catered to as well. A slow-pitch tournament and volleyball tournament will each take place in the after, with the local beer gardens running from noon to midnight and a live DJ in the evening.

Young said they were able to still hold Canada celebrations last year, but were limited by pandemic restrictions.

“It was definitely scaled back compared to this year,” she said. “It’s nice that there’s stuff for the kids, grownups, it’s just a really good day.”

Other activities include a dog performance and horseshoe doubles. Kids will also get to decorate bikes and participate in the parade.

Young has lived with her family in Maidstone since moving from England in 2015. As her three children, between 10-14 years old, get to enjoy the festivities, she said it’s a reminder of how unique the experience has been.

“I remember my first [Canada Day] here thinking, “This is awesome!”” she said. “It’s a very welcoming and friendly community, a good small town.”

Early votes

Prior to Canada Day, residents in Maidstone hit the ballot box.

The town will hold an advance poll for a Municipal By-Election Wednesday, with Don Young, Mark Foster and Scott Breadner as the reported candidates.
