Distressed cattle seized following investigation near NB

A man is facing charges for failing to provide adequate care after a large number of cattle were seized by Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan (APSS) from a property near North Battleford.

Following an investigation in April, Morris Tokaryk was charged under the Criminal Code for causing unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to animals and failing to provide adequate water, food, and care for animals.

He has also been charged under the Animal Protection Act for allowing animals to be in distress as well as for failing to comply with a corrective action order.

He is scheduled to appear in North Battleford provincial court on June 27.

Don Ferguson, executive director with the Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan and an animal protection officer, said it was “one of the logistically largest seizures in our existence.”

He added officers from Animal Protection Services responded in the case after receiving complaints from the public.

With the assistance of Blaine Lake RCMP, APSS executed a search warrant from April 6 to 8 at a property near Whitkow, Sask. As a result of the investigation, 308 cattle were seized.

Ferguson said the cattle were found to be in distress as a result of a lack of access to sufficient feed, water, and conditions that would significantly impair the animals’ health over time.

“Through the investigation over the course of three days [APSS] determined that the owner was not providing the requirements for the animal care duties under the Animal Protection Act, and that the animals were in distress,” he said. “We also had a registered veterinarian with us, and over the course of those three days took 308 animals into protective custody.”

BattlefordsNOW attempted to contact Tokaryk but was unable to reach him.

The allegations against the individual have not been proven in court.
