Capitol Annex celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day

The Capitol Annex in North Battleford kicked off Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations a day early in the community, with vendors and a free movie on Monday to celebrate the occasion.

With about 12 vendors on hand from noon to 7:30 p.m., general manager at the theatre, Aleksi Anseth said there was a nice variety of Indigenous small businesses and things to be found at the day’s event.

“We had some people who had made really nice ribbon skirts, some painters there, a lot of people who did beadwork, or made bath and body products, and then Chibogz was there selling some Filipino food as well,” she said.

“So there was a good variety of vendors and we got a good crowd around 2 p.m., with another little rush around when the movie started at 7:30 p.m., so that kind of capped off our market for the day.”

The market was available in the theatre foyer throughout the afternoon and into the early evening to give people a chance to drop by after work or throughout the day. The theatre then held a free showing of the 1998 movie Smoke Signals for the public to view.

Anseth said as they look ahead to next year, they intend to keep the event going in a similar fashion with a chance to build on it in the future.

“I’ll talk more with our vendors and see if they have any feedback, but [we’ll plan for] something similar; we definitely want to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day every year,” she said.
