Preliminary hearing for accused in Moosomin homicide set for November

A preliminary hearing for one of the accused in the Damian Moosomin homicide investigation is now scheduled for this fall.

Stormy Wapass-Semaganis, 24, of Edmonton, Alta., facing a charge of first-degree murder, originally had a preliminary hearing set for June 13 in North Battleford provincial court.

That did not proceed. Instead her case was move to June 20 to be spoken to.

At court Monday, Senior Crown Prosecutor Jennifer Schmidt waived the appearance of Wapass-Semaganis, who was previously released on conditions.

Judge Ian Mokuruk and defence counsel Brent Little appeared by phone.

The preliminary hearing is now scheduled for Nov. 7–10 in Courtroom #3.

Jannay Blackbird, 33, of Saulteaux First Nation, is facing a charge of first-degree murder, and is scheduled for a private pre-trial conference at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford June 24. She previously elected to be tried by judge and jury with the date still to be set.

Tye Partridge, 24, of Moosomin First Nation, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on May 27 after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the case. A charge of first-degree murder was withdrawn.

Denver Roy, 37, of Sweetgrass First Nation received 10 months in custody and nine months probation on Oct. 29, 2021, after pleading guilty to the charge of offering an indignity to a dead body. An additional charge of accessory after the fact was withdrawn.

Melissa Semaganis and a male youth under the age of 18 at the time of the incident, who were both facing a charge of accessory after the fact to murder, saw a stay of proceedings in their cases on April 25, 2022.

There is a publication ban on the details of the case until after all the accused individuals have gone through the court process.

RCMP previously reported Damian Moosomin, 20, was found deceased in the backyard of a property in the 1500 block of 105th Street in North Battleford on May 16, 2020. He was originally reported missing to police on May 11 of that year.
