Meota residents set for community garage sale

Residents in Meota are hoping for the weather to turn with a weekend full of sales ahead.

A community-wide garage sale is set from Friday to Sunday, with each residence holding their own hours for when items for sale will be on display. This is a first for the municipality.

Organizer Hayley Petrow said part of the motivation is to create an annual gathering for people that’s similar to the way neighbours came together when she was a kid.

“I remember going to my neighbourhood garage sale, where you buy the dumbest items, but get to meet your neighbours,” she said. “Then this can also bring more business into the area.”

“People will have it in their own lots and yards, with their own hours. It will be a good time.”

Petrow also noted that the mass cancellations from the pandemic have still thrown off the flow of events that come through communities. She wanted to highlight the fun people can have in Meota. Some of the businesses by the lake will have special deals during the weekend, including the Meota Hotel.

“It’s nice to show people they can come to the lake, go for supper or family activities,” she said. “And it’s a really welcoming community.”

While population fluctuates in Meota, given that it’s a lake town, Petrow said it’s grown in the last few years, particularly when it comes to young families.

“We have an [almost] two-year-old and he’s going to have at least 15-20 playmates, that doesn’t sound like a lot, but for Meota,” she said. “For cities, that doesn’t seem like a lot, but for an area that was once around 200 people, that’s now a lot of people.”

Mayor Dave Konopelski agreed with that sentiment, also noting the number of houses that have been added and the increase in kids.

“In the morning while walking, I see at least half a dozen mothers with new babies around,” he said. “School buses are full when they leave. Between the farm community around us and in town, there’s definitely an increase.”

Konopelski said he appreciates this initiative as something to help showcase Meota.

“It’s good for the community and we’re thankful to Hayley for doing that,” he said.

This type of community spirit is making it’s way to the rest of the municipality. Konopelski said another woman in the community came forward at council recently to discuss the possibility of getting a new playground built to accommodate the growing number of young families.

“She’s taken the initiative to put the word out and get support,” he said. “It’s good to see.”
