Battlefords Community Players casting call a success

Jun 13, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Those looking to get more involved in local theatre will want to consider Battlefords Community Players (BCP).

The non-profit organization recently held two days of auditions for people interested in being considered for upcoming acting parts with the troupe.

Executive producer Donna Challis said about 25 individuals took part in the auditions, ranging in age from younger people in their teens to those in their 70s.

“Our sessions have been geared to find out if there are people who say: ‘How come I never get involved?'” she said. “This was an open invitation to anybody and everyone to come out and show us who they are, what they are able to do and how they would like to be involved.”

Challis said the two sessions are just the beginning of the BCP’s plans to work harder to bring more new people to the club, and encourage those who used to be involved to come out and try it again now that they have more time.

“We have found that this was probably a much more relaxed opportunity for people to [attend],” she said. “[The event] just got people a chance to get more acquainted with each other. We thought it worked quite well.”

Challis noted the individuals who took part in the auditions last week had a fun opportunity to get to know BCP and see what is expected.

“Being in a play is not easy work,” she said. “We have to make sure that people understand how much time the commitment means, and, without scaring anybody away, how much work it can take. I think that’s the case with anything if you want to do it well. It does take time and it does take effort.”

Those who didn’t make it to the recent auditions will also have a chance to put their names in for consideration for casting for plays at a future date when it’s announced.

More workshops planned

BCP is also planning to hold some workshops to help people interested in volunteering in various roles in the theatre’s productions.

People are invited to contact Challis at Battlefords Community Players for more details.

“If they want to be involved in the next round, we are also looking at sessions on acting, stage managing, and directing,” she said. “We’re attempting to make sure that anybody that wants to belong can find their niche by us providing these workshops so they can find out what we’re all about.”

The workshops will be free to attend. People are also encouraged to join BCP with a $5 club membership.

BCP is next planning its summer program of shows this year, followed by the new production season, which starts in September.
