Battlefords ECIP sees strong turnout for Storywalks

Jun 4, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP) held a special Storywalks event in the community on Friday, for children and families to attend.

Spread out into three separate locations at Centennial Park and the library’s Central Park in North Battleford, as well as the A.C.T Park in Battleford, the event served as an alternative to ECIP’s usual Teddy Bear Clinic, so as to avoid gathering too many people in one place, while still allowing a fun day in the sun for children and families.

“We decided Storywalks would be a fun way to engage children and families and schools, whoever wants to come,” executive director with ECIP, Colleen Sabraw said. “People [could] come and go and do the events and enjoy a book to take back to their classroom or take home with them.”

Taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., about 500 people are expected to have attended throughout the day between the three locations, each featuring a different storybook theme, with Going on a Bear Hunt at Centennial Park, Tap the Magic Tree and Plant the Tiny Seed at Central Park among them.

Each location then had corresponding activities and games, including playing with balloons and on swing sets, with bubbles and even a parachute.

Sabraw said it was important to offer the event at different locations to make it as easily-accessible as possible for all.

“We wanted to make sure no matter where families were located they could access one of the storybook walks without too far a drive,” she said. “Hopefully everyone [had] fun and enjoyed the beautiful weather.”
