Rec and Parks Month kick-off

Community comes together at Battleford Fun Night

June is Recreation and Parks Month across the province, and to celebrate, the Battleford Community Spirit Group and Town of Battleford Parks and Rec Department, kicked things off with a special ‘Fun Night’ in the community on Thursday.

The event was the first of its kind, held in the Alex Dillabough Centre parking lot, and it served as a chance to get outdoors and soak in the sunshine in community.

President of the Battlefords Community Spirit Group, Tim Pruden said they couldn’t have asked for a better turnout on the evening, with a number of families coming by to enjoy the games and activities and to pick up a hotdog.

“This is just fantastic,” Pruden said, looking around with a smile, between shifts manning the grill. “I love this, because people are wanting to get out now, and it’s nice to see everybody come out and support this event and we just love doing it.”

With members of the local fire department on-hand, kids were given a chance to climb aboard a fire truck and sit inside, and even point and shoot the hose to watch the stream of water hit their target.

Just across the lot in the grass, a horse and carriage was present to give rides around the grassy area as families enjoyed the shade of the buggy.

The evening also served as an introduction to the new seniors’ fitness park, with RCMP on hand as well to host a bike rodeo for children and youth.

Pruden said what makes the event truly special is the way the whole community pitched in to play a part and make it possible.

“We really want to thank Westland Insurance as they really helped us out with this event, and the Town of Battleford and all the guys who work for the town that go over and above when we need something,” Pruden said.

“Discovery Co-op helped us tremendously with the food and drinks and Bill Volk and Murray Jensen brought their horses here, which was great. The Western Development Museum lent us their barbeque, and Christopher Stephens and the RCMP put on the bike rodeo. I’d just like to thank everybody who had a hand, and all the volunteers who came out and helped us with this whole event.”
