Jun 3, 2022 | 1:31 PM

Music filled the streets of downtown Battleford Thursday night, as the community celebrated the commencement of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Celebrating Her Majesty’s 70th year as head of the Commonwealth, the Platinum Jubilee celebration kicked off what is known as Jubilee Weekend, which will run until June 5.

President of the Battleford Legion Branch #9, Esther Delainey lit the beacon and called it “a great honour” for them to host the event.

She thanked the Legion pipe band for initiating the local celebration and putting on the performance, Legion’s first vice president, Tim Popp for organizing, and the many who gathered together to celebrate at the Battleford Lions Park gazebo.

Town of Battleford Mayor, Ames Leslie and Battlefords MLA, Jeremy Cockrill were also among those on hand for the celebration.

Leslie thanked the Legion for hosting the event in the town and called the queen’s dedication to service something to aspire to.

“If I can be, and if all of us in elected positions can be, half the leader she has been for 70 years, we’ll be grateful and in a good place,” Leslie said.

Cockrill added that it’s nothing short of inspirational as he thinks about the Queen’s years of service.

“When I think of the Queen I think of selfless service, as somebody who has really served the Commonwealth and the world for 70 years in such a selfless manner,” Cockrill said. “I think that is so inspiring for all of us in our daily lives.”

Pipe bands from all over the world and Commonwealth took part in celebrating the Platinum Jubilee Thursday night, with pipes and horns played in unison at 9:35 p.m., and beacons lit at 9:45 p.m. local time.
