Track districts kick off in North Battleford

May 26, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Off like a shot, Day 1 of Battle West Track and Field Districts took place at Centennial Park on Wednesday in North Battleford.

Featuring close to 500 athletes from Grades 7–12 from Leoville to Luseland, the competition was heavy and the turnout strong, with even a bit of rain not enough to dampen the spirits of competitors on the day.

Among the standout performances from the local high schools were by North Battleford Comprehensive High School seniors, Jackson Geddes and Kobie Anderson, who finished first and second in the senior boys 100-metre final.

“I’m feeling pretty good, and I’m just happy me and the other Comp. guy were first and second,” Geddes said following the race, gesturing to Anderson with a smile. “We’ve been competing lots in practice and just making each other better all year.”

In addition to the 100-metre win, Geddes also took home first in the senior 400-metre and hurdles, and sixth in shotput. Anderson, a North Stars commit for the fall, added to his second-place finish taking third in long jump as well, with his 200-metre event still to come on Day 2.

Grade 9 student at John Paul II Collegiate, Matteo Miedema also had a day to remember, winning first place in the junior boys’ 100-metre final, in what was his first taste of track districts at the high school level.

“It was pretty sweet to pull it off,” Miedema said with a smile, catching his breath following the race. “Crossing the finish line I wasn’t even sure if I had made it first, as the first three positions crossed almost at the same time. So I was happy to hear, and big shout-out to the guys who finished second and third, too.”

Thursday is an off-day between track days, for World Catholic Education Day. Districts will wrap up with Day 2 Friday, once again at the Centennial Park track. The top two finishes in each event at the high school level will represent the Battle West district team at provincials next month on June 3–4 in Regina.
