Penrod reflects on WHL Draft, realizing a dream

It has been quite a summer already for Saskatoon’s Tyce Penrod.

Coming off a standout season with the Saskatoon Stallions of the U15 Sask AA League, Penrod announced his commitment to the Battlefords AAA Stars earlier this spring, prior to being selected by the Portland Winterhawks in the 10th round, #216 overall, of the recent WHL Prospects Draft.

Penrod said getting drafted to the WHL has been a dream of his for some time, to follow in the footsteps of his cousin and graduating Humboldt Broncos’ captain, Kade Olsen, who himself was a ninth round selection of the 2016 class by the Vancouver Giants.

“I wanted to get drafted, so it was pretty cool when I heard the news,” Penrod said. “It was a goal of mine to get drafted, and I wanted to be kind of like [Olsen] and get drafted too like he was at my age.”

However, when asked who the first call he made was upon hearing the news, Penrod couldn’t help but let out a laugh, noting that of his close friends and family, he may have been among the last to know, finding out at the gym while training with his older brother.

“I didn’t think I was going to end up getting drafted as it was getting to the later rounds,” Penrod said, adding that it was his brother who actually broke the news to him after checking his phone, followed by a barrage of texts from family and friends offering their congratulations as well.

“My brother just started clapping and told me I just got drafted, so I was pretty pumped up; it was pretty sick (cool),” Penrod said with a laugh.

That same brother, Trey Penrod, will also be joining Tyce on the AAA Stars this fall, for the 2022-23 season, marking the first chance the pair have had to play together since Tyce’s first year of peewee hockey.

“I’m looking forward to it,” the younger Penrod said. “…And getting billeted with him too hopefully will be nice.”

Penrod scored 31 goals and 53 points in 31 games with the Saskatoon Stallions last season.
