City to nominate potential candidates for Jubilee Medal program

The City of North Battleford will have an opportunity to participate in the nomination process for the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (Saskatchewan) program.

Mayor David Gillan discussed the program roll out at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty previously announced the commemorative medal is being created in honour of the Queen’s 70th anniversary on the Throne.

According to the province’s letter, the medals will recognize Saskatchewan residents’ significant contributions and achievements, especially during the pandemic. The program will run from the spring of 2022 to Feb. 5, 2023.

The city will be responsible for nominating potential medal recipients who contributed to their communities through public service, volunteer programs, culture, diversity and pandemic response efforts.

“I am looking forward to figuring out how many medals we might be able to bestow in our community,” Mayor Gillan said. “I’m sure there are lots of people we can think of.”

The province will recognize individuals across Saskatchewan working in all sectors and communities.

Council authorized administration to let the province know the city wishes to participate in the Jubilee Medal program. The province will then advise the city how to nominate individuals, and will indicate the number of medals it will be allocated.

“It does seem like an interesting program,” Coun. Kelli Hawtin said.
