Meadow Lake Agricultural Society gearing up for 4-H Livestock Show and Sale

May 19, 2022 | 3:54 PM

There will be lots of excitement in northwest Saskatchewan next month when the Meadow Lake Agricultural Society hosts the Meadow Lake Livestock Show and Sale.

The District 36 4-H show runs June 7, starting at 8:45 a.m. with a variety of activities during the day, followed by the beef sale at 4 p.m. at the Meadow Lake Stockyards.

James Jensen, president of District 36 4-H and a member of the Meadow Lake 4-H Beef Club, said it will be the first time the event will be fully opened up to the public since the pandemic.

“Last year we also [offered] it, but due to Saskatchewan 4-H [restrictions] we could only have members and basically the immediate family at the show,” he said. “This year with everything opened up, we can actually have the public there. It’s awesome because there are a lot of people in our community that tried to come to it, older folks and the school classes. Finally, this year we can go ahead with it.”

All the steers from the District 4-H clubs projects will be up for auction, including the grand champion and reserve champion steers.

“Every year we have our show in the morning,” Jensen said. “Then, all the buyers and business people will come down at 3:30 or 4 p.m. and [we] run it through a normal auction.”

The 4-H youth are also looking forward to the event.

“They are hoping for a good show and sale because they put a lot of time into their projects all throughout the year,” Jensen said. “For the beef, it’s usually in September when we start, until the middle of June.”

Through their involvement with 4-H, youth earn academic credits and have an opportunity to win scholarships to assist with their post-secondary studies.

In addition to the Meadow Lake Club, Makwa and Goodsoil, known as Beaver River, 4-H beef clubs will also be showing their livestock.

Additional activities in the day include the Meadow Lake 4-H light horse show at around 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m.

“They are going to do a little demonstration to show their projects for the year,” Jensen said.

As well, the Goodsoil Multiple 4-H Club will be in attendance with their display.

Leading up to the June 7 event, a number of Achievement Days are planned ahead in the area that are open to the public. The Meadow Lake 4-H Light Horse Achievement Day takes place May 28. The Beaver River Agricultural 4-H Achievement Day runs May 29. The Meadow Lake 4-H Beef Achievement Day takes place June 4 and the Makwa 4-H Beef Achievement Day will run June 5.

Jensen is inviting everyone to attend any of the events offered.

“The more the merrier,” he said. “We like to show people the projects, and how hard kids worked throughout the year.”
