Finlayson Island truss bridge to close temporarily during repairs

May 18, 2022 | 5:00 AM

People planning to use the Finlayson Island truss bridge this summer will need to keep in mind the structure will be closed intermittently while repairs are underway.

The issue was discussed at this week’s Town of Battleford council meeting.

According to the town’s Facebook Page, the north and south bridges are being repaired in the summer and fall of 2022. The town wants to remind residents for their safety to check the bridge availability before using the structures. There will be restricted use of the bridges and Finlayson Island during this period. However, the town says, the end result will see “both bridges safe and enjoyed by all.”

The town advises that the arched south bridge connecting Finlayson Island to Battleford will be temporarily closed as of May 19 for repairs. The south bridge needs upgrades to be able to transport the heavy equipment required to fix the north bridge.

The town said it will continue to update residents on the bridge status as the rehabilitation work progresses.

Mayor Ames Leslie asks for everyone’s patience and understanding while the work is underway.

“We do have a hard deadline of November 22 or November 23 to have this project complete,” Leslie added.

The town will keep people informed of all closures on its website here.

The total budgeted amount for the comprehensive rehabilitation project is estimated at about $3.67 million. From that amount, the town will cover $1.1 million for its share. The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) will cover the remaining $2.5 million, through federal and provincial funding.
