Battlefords AAA Sharks announce commitments for fall 2022

The Battlefords AAA Sharks have announced four new player commitments for the 2022-23 season.

Forwards Zayda Summach, Gabrielle Zaleschuk and Reece Hawkins (F/D), and goaltender Mikayla Christmann, make up the new signings which fill out their U18 roster for the coming season.

Zayda Summach

Summach, a product of Dodsland, Sask., (just an hour 40 minutes south of the Battlefords) was the second leading scorer on the local Northwest U15 AA team last season, with 15 goals and 24 points in 27 games.

Head coach of the Sharks, Ricci Girolami said in addition to her offensive spark she also provides a strong determination that will be infectious to the team.

“Her work ethic is great, and she plays a strong two-way game, so we’re looking forward to seeing what she can do with us,” Girolami said. “There’s no quit in her game, so we’re excited about signing her.”

Reece Hawkins

A versatile player capable of playing forward or defence, Hawkins scored 12 points in 28 games at the U15 AA level last year with the Swift Current Wildcats.

Lining up last year primarily on the blue line, the product of Kincaid, Sask. finished first amongst Wildcats’ defenceman and sixth overall in team points, in addition to her defensive responsibilities.

Girolami said Hawkins’ ability to play anywhere in the lineup makes her a valuable addition to the team.

“We saw her as a dual player,” Girolami said. “We signed her as a forward but she also is a defenceman, and that helps our roster too. If one of our girls goes down on defence we’ll have someone able to fill in that spot.”

Gabrielle Zaleschuk

Saskatoon’s Gabrielle Zaleschuk provides an offensive spark for the AAA Sharks, after scoring 24 goals and 33 points in 20 games last season with the Saskatoon Comet Chargers of the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League, to finish second in team scoring.

Having served as captain of the Chargers as well, Girolami said Zaleschuk brings a lot to the table.

“She’s got really good hands which we need and we’re hoping she’ll put some points on the board for us,” Girolami said. “She adds a little height to our team too, with her and Reece, so we’re getting a little above our 5’2″ height limit,” he laughed.

Mikayla Christmann

Despite being just 15 years of age, goaltender, Mikayla Christmann already has a year experience in the SFU18AAAHL with Saskatoon last season.

The Warman product won nine of her 15 games with the Saskatoon Stars last season, and is someone Girolami said solidifies the team between the pipes.

“Mikayla’s a very strong goalie and we’re very happy she decided to sign with us,” he said. “She played with a few of our girls in Warman a few years ago so that made the transition easy for her to come in, and she’s a real quality netminder, so we’re looking forward to seeing what she’ll bring to the Sharks this year.”

The Sharks’ players will return to the community this fall for the 2022-23 season.
