Battleford Legion planning celebration to mark Queen’s Jubilee

May 17, 2022 | 4:08 PM

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 9 in Battleford will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, to mark Her Majesty’s 70th year on the throne, with a special piped in beacon lighting ceremony.

The festivities will take place in downtown Battleford on Thursday, June 2.

Town of Battleford approved the Legion’s request to have barricades set up on Second Avenue from 22 Street to 23 Street from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Legion is planning a bagpipe band and will play a special performance called Diu Regnare, composed by renowned Scottish piper Stuart Liddell, as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on her Platinum Jubilee.

“Pipe bands from all over the world and Commonwealth will play this tune at the same time on June 2nd, and a beacon will be lit. At Saskatchewan time at 9:35 p.m. the tune play will start, and [then] the beacon will be lit at 9:45 p.m.,” town CAO Ash Alam stated in his submitted report.

The Legion plans to use the town’s gazebo at the downtown park on 22 Street as part of the festivities.

Mayor Ames Leslie said administration will send letters to businesses and homeowners in the area to advise them of the planned temporary street closures.

Councillor Judy Pruden said it was a nice way to honour the Queen.

“Hopefully, lots of people come out,” she said.

Councillor Shelley Boutin-Gervais echoed Pruden’s sentiments, saying “it’s a great tribute to the Queen.”

Leslie said he is looking forward to seeing the cultural aspects of the ceremony.

Recreation and Parks Month Kick Off

The Battleford Community Spirit Group and the town’s Parks and Recreation Committee plan to hold a fun outing the same day as the Jubilee celebration.

This event will take place at the Alex Dillabough Centre parking lot June 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Activities will include an RCMP bike rodeo for kids with a focus on safety tips, senior activity centre demonstrations, and hot dogs, chips and drinks to enjoy. Discovery Co-op is sponsoring the event.

Some of the Battleford Fire Dept. firefighters will also be there to meet the public. The event will also include games and wagon rides.

Councillor Doug Laing was thrilled with all the activities, saying between the Jubilee celebration later in the evening and the Community Spirit Group plans earlier, there will be lots to do in the town that day.

“It makes for a full evening,” he said.
