Dead Heads vs Shed Antlers
Have you ever found a dead head? (Or are you asking yourself, “What is a dead head?”)
A dead head is when you find antlers with the skull still attached. Different than sheds, dead heads are considered found dead wildlife and require a Mount and Retain Permit to legally keep them. If you find a dead head, it’s best to take a picture right where you found it, then report it to a conservation officer within seven days. https://www.saskatchewan.ca/find-your-nearest-environment…
Here are examples of the differences between dead heads and shed antlers:
• Shed antlers are not considered wildlife, so they can be bought and sold without
a permit.
• Found dead wildlife must be reported to a conservation officer and cannot be
sold, bartered or traded.
• Antlers cut off the skull above or below the burr, creating two distinct antlers, can
be sold but need a Sale of Wildlife Permit with licence history.
To make sure all regulations are followed, we always recommend consulting with a local conservation officer before purchasing or selling wildlife.
