2022 tax roll

Town formally adopts new mill rate; tax notices to be sent out

May 3, 2022 | 5:23 PM

Town of Battleford residents can expect to see their tax notices coming out soon now that the new mill rate has been adopted.

At this week’s meeting, council formally adopted the new mill rate to reflect a 2.5 per cent tax increase to the average assessed property, as approved for the 2022 municipal budget.

The uniform municipal mill rate will be set at 3.75 mills for all taxable property in the town for 2022, an increase from a rate of 3.42 mills in 2021.

“The mill rate increased according to our approved budget,” Mayor Ames Leslie said.

He reminded property owners that their actual adjustment to their taxes will depend on the assessment value of their property.

“The 2.5 per cent (tax increase) was passed in the budget for 2022 as a necessity to keep up with inflation,” Leslie said. “This is just the official approval to put it into the tax roll. So there was no surprise. Some people will see an increase from this.”

Councillor Doug Laing echoed Leslie’s comments.

“We have been aware of this for a while,” he said. “We knew this was coming.”

Council unanimously gave third reading and adopted the bylaw to approve the base tax and mill rate levy in accordance with the Municipalities Act.
