The Battlefords AAA Stars held their annual year-end awards banquet over the weekend, celebrating the best of the 2021-22 season.

Stars forward, Kobie Anderson was named Team MVP after finishing second in scoring with 37 points this year, including a club-high 18 goals. He said establishing himself as a key player on the team — in this, his second year — was a goal in his quest to take the next step as a player.

“It’s a great feeling that the coaches thought I had a good enough year to be the MVP of the team, and that’s something I’ve really worked for was wanting to be the top guy on the team and support the team however I can,” Anderson said.

On the defensive end, blue liner, Easton Adrian, won the Bruce Yockey Award for Top Defenceman and team +/- Award, while Stars captain, Nate Monchuk, received the Coaches Award and Wade Belak Memorial Award for Top Defensive Player.

Wuttunee said winning Rookie honours is something he takes to heart.

“It was special for sure; I had my whole family there, so seeing the smile on their faces just brought one to mine as well,” Wuttunee said. “I had a sense of pride for myself too because I know the work I’ve put in the last couple of years has paid off, so I felt really good and that I accomplished quite a bit this year, which just gives me a drive to do better and strive for more.”

Head coach of the AAA Stars, Dale Grayston, said as he looks back on the year, there are many positives to build on for the team as they look ahead to next season.

“I think there was a good improvement in the last couple of months, as we really showed the development,” Grayston said. “We battled a lot of things early in the year between injuries, suspensions and all of that, but once we got back in January we were able to bring it all together for the playoffs and that’s always what you want to see is that development and getting better each year.”
