Battlefords Disc Golf encourage continued growth with season ahead

Apr 22, 2022 | 1:00 PM

As the weather begins to warm, it won’t be long until lightweight discs are floating through the spring breeze.

The Battlefords Disc Golf Club will open their season May 5, running Thursday nights to the end of August. This will mark the second year of the women’s league, which will run alongside the men’s, with an eye on continuing the growth of the sport in the community heading into this year.

Executive director, Kennedy Schmidt said with discs on-hand this year for use or purchase each week, and weekly prizes on the women’s side, the club is hoping to continue to build on the momentum they’ve established over the last few years with a number of new faces coming out to try the sport for the first time, even during the pandemic.

“I think disc golf is one of the things COVID almost made more popular and better just because of how easy it was to go out and do it,” she said. “So I’m excited to see all the people that did pick up a new hobby during COVID who might be coming back, add to some of the newer people who have just started playing the last couple of years.”

In addition to weekly play, there will also be two main tournaments scheduled through the summer. The second-annual “Two Town Throwdown” tournament will be held at North Battleford’s Centennial Park and the new Battleford course July 16-17, followed by the Gold Eagle Open, Sept. 10-11, which holds the distinction of being the largest disc golf tournament in Saskatchewan, and will take place at Jackfish.

For more information on the season, visit the Battlefords Disc Golf Facebook page, or attend their upcoming AGM, open to the public May 14 at 1 p.m. at the horse shoe club building across from Caleb Village.
