Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Survey sees good response

The Town of Battleford reported the Welcoming and Inclusive Communities (WIC) Survey saw a good uptake from the community.

The Town of Battleford and the City of North Battleford conducted the public survey from Dec. 6, 2021 to Feb. 28, 2022, both online and onsite.

A total of 1,040 citizens participated in the survey. From that amount, 233 residents from the town took part, as well as 659 residents from North Battleford, 23 individuals from the regional Indigenous or Métis communities, and 125 not listed.

The survey contained 36 questions for respondents to answer.

The survey also had a prize component to encourage more respondents. Five winners were awarded from the random draw; each will receive a $50 gift card.

“The survey went well,” Mayor Ames Leslie said during this week’s town council meeting. “Thank you to the people for taking it. I think a deep dive into some of these categories on inclusion and diversity is going to only make our community stronger. Some of the feedback on how we can improve ourselves as elected officials, as well as maybe some of the programs we could look at for our employees… can only make us a stronger community in this inclusion and diversity.”

He said he looks forward to delving further into the results of the survey.

The aim of the public survey is to look at the needs of the region as an inclusive community, and to determine priority areas of focus for the city’s and town’s efforts for the future.

Both the city and town became members of the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities in June 2021, and are committed to developing their own action plans as part of the effort.
