Town awards tender for cemetery expansion

Apr 19, 2022 | 8:20 AM

The Town of Battleford is planning a new expansion project for its cemetery located off Highway 16 West.

At its meeting Monday evening, council approved awarding the tender for the project to firm Wilco Contractors Southwest Inc., at $548,100, the lowest of two bids received.

The project has been in the works for a number of years .

According to Sask Tenders, the initiative includes grading, fencing work and a granular road construction. The engineers for the project, Crosby Hanna and Associates recommended the town accept the bid from Wilco Contractors Southwest.

There is also an engineering cost for the project of $17,000. With $32,886 in PST, that brings the total expenses to $597,986.

Director of Parks and Recreation Jordan Schechtel said the project was approved in the town’s 2022 budget.

In his submitted report, CAO Ash Alam noted the total estimated cost is still under the town’s budget for the project of $670,000. Coun. Shelley Boutin-Gervais was satisfied with the proposed bid.

“It is achieving everything we wanted to in the expansion,” she said.

Coun. David George was also pleased with the offer.

“It’s going to get done. It’s been a few years that we’ve been waiting for it,” he said. “So let’s get ‘er done.”

Mayor Ames Leslie, appearing virtually while Deputy Mayor Judy Pruden chaired the meeting, said he was in favour of the proposal.

“This is something that was the next stage after we did the ground stabilization out there,” he said. “As Coun. Boutin-Gervais said, it’s a necessary evil, and I’m glad we’re doing it the right way.”
