NSRBL sets schedule, outlook for spring 2022

Apr 7, 2022 | 5:15 PM

The North Sask River Baseball League (NSRBL) held their annual general meeting this week, to discuss the upcoming senior baseball season.

From start times and season schedules, to the status of teams and divisional breakdowns, below are some of the biggest takeaways from the league meeting.

Senior Cardinals, Jays leave of absence

The Unity Senior Cardinals and Lloyd Jays will be taking a leave of absence from the NSRBL this season, with a likely return anticipated for at least Unity’s second team as early as spring 2023.

“[Unity’s] got their junior program right now, and they’re thinking in the near future a lot of those guys will graduate into senior baseball, so hopefully they’ll be able to go for next year,” League Commissioner, Kelvin Colliar said. “I’m not quite sure if [the Jays] will be back after this year, but nonetheless they will be taking a leave of absence as well for this year.”

Beavers/Trappers to join forces

In other team news, the North Battleford Beavers and Battlefords Trappers will be re-joining forces this year, amalgamating their two teams into one for the spring season, for the first time since 2016.

Season schedule/Divisional breakdown

Scheduled to open with a full five-game slate of action May 19, the league will feature 10 teams this year, split into two divisions of North and South, in an effort to cut down on travel. Each team will play a home-and-home against each of their division rivals, with an additional five games against the other division.

The North Battleford Beavers will be joined by the Wilkie Brewers, Unity Junior Cardinals, Kindersley Stallions and Macklin Lakers in the South Division, while the North Division will be made up of Meadow Lake Sox, Standard Hill Lakers, St. Walburg Reds, Mevin Flyers, and Lloyd Twins.

Playoff outlook

All 10 teams will make the playoffs, with the #7-through-#10 seeds playing in the wildcard games to open the postseason schedule July 7. From there the teams will then be seeded in standard fashion, #1-through-#8, with the top teams playing the lower seeds.

“We’re looking forward to a normal year of play again, and it should be a good year,” Colliar said. “Guys are really enthused about getting going again.”

The full NSRBL schedule is available here. More on the Beavers and Trappers joining together will be posted in the days to come.
