New judges appointed in North Battleford, Meadow Lake

Two new judges have been added to Provincial Court in North Battleford and Meadow Lake.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced the appointment of Ian William Mokuruk and Bryce Pashovitz on Friday, both of whom join the bench after lengthy legal careers.

Mokuruk goes to North Battleford after 20 years in law, primarily practicing in northern Saskatchewan. Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said in a release that Mokuruk has conducted himself with “patience, humility and honesty.”

“His experience and legal expertise make him a terrific addition to the judiciary, and I know he will go on to serve the people and community of North Battleford admirably.”

Mokuruk received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Studies at the University of Saskatchewan and obtained his law degree from the Saskatchewan College of Law in 2001. After being called to the bar in 2002, he began his legal career as an associate with Slusar & Co. until 2004, when he assumed a position as a staff lawyer with the Legal Aid Commission in Saskatoon. In 2005, he joined Roe & Co. as an associate, and in 2013 he co-founded Mokuruk & Woods Law Office in Saskatoon.

Bryce Pashovitz comes to the Meadow Lake community having spent more than 25 years in law.

“Judge Pashovitz brings a breadth of experience to our Provincial Court in the community of Meadow Lake,” Wyant said. “His skills and credentials as a legal professional represent precisely what we look for in a member of the judiciary. I have no doubts that he will continue to serve our province well in his new capacity as judge.”

Pashovitz received his law degree in 1995 from the University of Saskatchewan, where he graduated with distinction and was a co-winner of the Donald MacLean Prize in Constitutional Law. Through the 1993–1995 school years he was selected as a student editor of the Saskatchewan Law Review.

After graduating, Pashovitz went on to work with the Saskatchewan Department of Justice as a Crown Prosecutor in Regina from 1996 to 2008. He also prosecuted drug offences during a leave spent as Crown Counsel with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada from 2008–2009, before returning to the Ministry of Justice and transferring to the Saskatoon office in 2009. He conducted trials until 2018 when he was selected as an Associate Regional Crown Prosecutor in Saskatoon, where he continues to this day.

In addition to his professional appointments, since 2012, Pashovitz has been editing a textbook, Law Professionals Guide To: Investigating Impaired Drivers, and in 2019 completed editing its fourth edition. He received the Premier’s Award for Excellence in Public Service in 2004.

Throughout his career, Pashovitz has remained active in the communities he has served by acting as treasurer for the Pense Minor Hockey Association Booster Club from 1998–2008 and as team treasurer for various Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association teams from 2008–2011.
