Heavy Oil Show returns to Lloydminster

Mar 31, 2022 | 4:30 PM

Lloydminster’s Heavy Oil Show is back this fall.

One of the premier events for oil and gas in the area, the 20th bi-annual version of the show is set to feature a variety of exhibits, demonstrations and speakers related to the industry. The Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association will host the event on Sept. 14-15, with an opening ceremony and banquet preceding the displays on Sept. 13.

Show chairperson John Stanyer said in a release that the committee is excited for the return of the show, calling it a staple of heavy oil.

“The industry is staring down the start of a new boom. The show will provide attendees and exhibitors with the chance to focus on the breadth of innovation within the sector over the past few years.”

Lloydminster hasn’t hosted the show since 2018, due to COVID-19 restrictions over the past two years.

Speaking to battlefordsNOW, Mayor Gerald Aalbers said the show is also a staple in the City, which has missed many huge events in the past two years because of the pandemic. The demonstrations and exhibitions take place both indoors and outdoors. As well, Aalbers said it’s important to address uncertainty, when the industry is showing signs of recovery.

“People are still wondering [where the industry is at today] so this is a chance to get out and see old acquaintances and hopefully create opportunities for people looking for work,” he said.

The speakers for the event will be announced at a later date, however, Aalbers noted that they are working on having both Energy Ministers from Alberta and Saskatchewan to speak to the political landscape with the oil and gas sector. That discussion would take place around noon on Sept. 14, following the speakers during the opening ceremonies.

“Each of those are very important to giving people a listen to what those in oil and gas are seeing in the future,” Aalbers said. “It also will allow people in the industry to know what’s on people’s minds.”

As gas prices soar and the cost-of-living increases across the province, Aalbers said examinations of where industries like heavy oil are trending is even more important.

“Events of the world today are challenging us,” he said. “Both at the pump and in the action of governments that effect energy.”

Aalbers added that he and other municipal leaders have been in contact with their MP’s and that he will bring forward concerns to the province at the upcoming SUMA conference this weekend.
