Barbecue fundraiser planned for Krista Fox during Battlefords stop

Mar 31, 2022 | 2:42 PM

A community barbecue is being planned for Krista Fox who has completed one leg of her cross-Canada journey to raise awareness about the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women

The luncheon fundraiser will be held outside in the parking lot at Miwasin Kikinaw at 962 102 St. in North Battleford on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a small presentation at 1 p.m.

Donations are welcome as all proceeds will benefit Krista Fox and Lindsey Bishop who is also taking part in the walk.

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Inc. (BATC) is organizing the barbecue fundraiser.

BATC communications manager Sheldon Fox, who is also Krista Fox’s nephew, is helping with the event.

Krista Fox is walking throughout the country with Lindsey Bishop, the sister of Saskatoon woman Megan Gallagher, who has been missing since Sept. 2020. Diane Morin, the mother of Ashley Morin of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, who has been missing from North Battleford since July 10, 2018, is also taking part. Lindsey’s husband Derek Bishop is participating as well.

Krista started the walk in Victoria, B.C., in February, travelled through B.C. and Alberta, and crossed into Lloydminster on Tuesday. She will be in the Battlefords Friday, and on April 8 will arrive in Saskatoon.

North Battleford Mayor David Gillan will join Fox and the rest of the walkers and supporters on Friday morning where they will leave from Paynton, Sask., and walk towards the Battlefords. After that, they will participate in the barbecue fundraiser.

Sheldon Fox was thrilled to hear the mayor will take part also.

“I’m pretty excited,” he said, adding that to see a local political leader get involved to show support sends a positive message to the community.
