SaskPower warns customers of email scam

Mar 17, 2022 | 3:03 PM

SaskPower is issuing a province wide alert, with respect to a new email scam.

Customers are essentially being told there’s an issue with processing their last bill, and are being encouraged to log on to MySaskPower to submit a payment.

A link then directs the customer to a fraudulent page, where upon entering their credentials, the customers are prompted to enter in their credit card information. SaskPower’s Media Relations Consultant Scott McGregor said the customer care centre has been receiving complaints from every corner of the province.

“It’s a pretty wide scam that’s being targeted to our customers,” he said.

Anyone who has received this email and are concerned they may be a victim, are being advised to contact their credit card issuer as soon as possible. Also to contact SaskPower and have their online registration reset.

McGregor explained the people behind this scam have taken a great deal of care to make it look like a legitimate SaskPower email, but he added there’s a few ways people can see through it.

“Whenever you get an email from SaskPower you should always look at the “from” line; look at who is actually sending the email,” he said.

McGregor also noted the link that prompts people to log into the MySaskPower account, takes a person to a URL that is not a SaskPower web address.

“If anything looks a bit off or you are not expecting it, give the call centre a call and confirm it is a legitimate communication,” McGregor said.
