RCMP Report Pt. 1: Active break-in cases, several break-in arrests

Mar 17, 2022 | 2:31 PM

Multiple investigations into break and enter crimes from the past two weeks are underway in the Battlefords, while arrests were also made.

The RCMP are seeking public’s assistance in identifying two suspects involved in two separate thefts from the early morning hours of March 1 in North Battleford. Images show the subjects suspected of being involved in the theft of surveillance equipment at two businesses within the city.

Of the 10 calls from the week, police did make two arrests after locating a break and enter in progress north of Cochin Monday morning.

Two suspects were located on scene at the provincial park and fled on foot. Members pursued for roughly a kilometre before completing the arrest.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the detachment has had numerous reports of incidents in the area from witnesses and camera footage in indicate as many as three or four individuals involved.

“Whether these individuals were part of that or not is still under investigation,” he said.

“There was several cabins or residences broken into with some other damage done, so that’s where all of the following charges stem from.”

Both 23 year-old Cameron Katcheech and 22 year-old Andy Swiftwolfe face 17 charges, including three counts of break and enter, seven counts of mischief under $5,000, three counts of theft over $5,000 and resisting arrest. The pair were remanded into custody and appeared in court on Tuesday.

Canine pursuit

A 17-year-old youth was arrested and is facing multiple charges following a rbeak and enter and flight from police.

The report of break-in in the morning of March 11 was on the 400 block of 33rd St. in Battleford, where the suspect entered the home and left blood on the door and inside the home, before stealing keys for the residence and making off with a Ford F150. A previously reported stolen vehicle was located nearby after it had struck a fence, indicating the driver had been injured in the collision.

The stolen F150 was then located initially in North Battleford a short time later, where the suspect identified and fled from police before being located again on 28th St. in Battleford. The Police Dog Unit was used to assist in a tracking of the suspect to a residence nearby, where the arrest was made.

“Because the vehicle was recently abandoned, we knew the odds of trapping the suspect were up,” Tremblay said.

As a result, the youth was remanded on several charges, which included two counts of possession of stolen property, flight from a peace officer, dangerous driving, theft of an automobile, resisting arrest and failing to comply with two Youth Probation Orders.

“We’re talking about breaking into a home and at least a couple of stolen vehicles, so it’s an elevated offence,” Tremblay noted, adding that it will take some time for the blood samples from the stolen vehicle and the broken into home to be sent in for analysis.

Other thefts

One other break-in occurred on the 1000 block of 113th St., where a resident coming home on March 9 found a male suspect had broken in and fled upon their return. The suspect fled north wearing black joggers and a black shirt.

Police also dealt with 10 reports of stolen vehicles, two of which are still being investigated. These include:

  • A black 2004 Audi A4 (Sask License 109-MNN reported stolen from a residence on the Mosquito First Nation sometime during the day on March 15.
  • A white 2003 Ford Windstar (Sask License KP2PB) reported stolen from the 100 block of 19th St. in Battleford shortly after 9:00 a.m. on March 10.

Anyone with information on any incident is urged to call the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
