North Battleford public works recognized provincially

Public works employees in North Battleford recently received provincial honours in Saskatoon for their workplace performance over the past year.

Three City employees were recognized during the 63^rd Saskatchewan Public Works Association (SPWA) Spring Conference. The event is a gathering of more than 800 communities, rural Municipalities and First Nations, along with government and municipal decision-makers involved in all aspects of public works. Municipal engineers, consultants, suppliers and contractors were also invited to attend.

For the City of North Battleford, Fleet & Maintenance Manager Seton Winterhalt was given the award of merit, while Water & Sewer Operations Supervisor Joe Gagne was named professional manager of the year. Recently retired Roadway Supervisor Colin Carriere also received a lifetime member award for his 33 years of service in North Battleford.

During Monday’s city council meeting, Mayor David Gillan congratulated the three winners on the recognition. He added that council and adminstration are very proud of their public works employees.

“It’s great to see that we have such great employees doing such great work, recognized outside the community as well as inside,” Gillan said.

The mayor also took time to specifically thank Carriere for his service over the past three decades and wished him well on his retirement.

“Your shoes are hard to fill, you’ll be missed,” Gillan said. “I hope the fishing is good.”

Public works employees will be highlighted nationally in mid-May, when National Public Works Week takes place. This is typically marked by resolutions and proclamations from mayors, reeves and premiers.

Support of Ukraine continues

North Battleford will continue to fly the Ukrainian flag for the remainder of March.

Council voted unanimously to authorize the move, following administration reaching out to the province regarding the timeline of flying the flag in Regina. At this time, the government has not given a definite answer and several communities across Saskatchewan are still attempting to acquire flags to fly.

Administration also noted that the City of Estevan and other municipalities had already committed to flying the flag for the reminder of the month and some have changed outdoor lighting around their respective City Hall’s to blue and yellow.

Gillan thanked council members for their support on the matter, which has been at the forefront of the significant Ukrainian population in the area.

The City will also have the option of utilizing another Ukrainian flag in the event of proclamations.
