Travel discouraged in the Battlefords, light snow overnight

Multiple communities in northwest Saskatchewan have weather alerts in place due to blowing snow.

Environment Canada has a blowing snow advisory in effect for the Battlefords and surrounding region. Wind gusts have reached up to 80 kilometres per hour in central and southwestern Saskatchewan in the afternoon with reduced visibility as a result of the strong winds.

A wind warning is in effect for the City of Lloydminster and communities immediately to the east. All municipalities further along Highway #16 are within the Battlefords advisory.

While things are expected to subside overnight, travel is predicted to be hazardous in some locations and emergency services are warning motorists of the risk. Unity RCMP is recommending against unnecessary travel in the areas of Unity, Willkie, Landis and Macklin, with possible icy roads and blowing snow causing poor highway conditions.

Multiple reports have come from drivers south of the Battlefords on Highway 4, stressing that visibility is at a minimum. Police are asking drivers to avoid traveling in these areas until the conditions improve.

Further to the north in Meadow Lake and area, no alerts are in effect, but there is light snow and some blowing snow, with wind gusts between 40-60 km/h. These periods may continue through the evening, with the snowfall accumulating to around two centimetres.

While the winds will eventually calm down, light snow should come and go in the Battlefords and area with the possibility of a couple cm of snow by Tuesday evening. Day time highs in the northwest should average around -11 Celsius, the possibility of plus temperatures by Saturday.
