COVID levels dropping in P.A. and rising in North Battleford: study

Mar 7, 2022 | 1:00 PM

COVID-19 levels in Prince Albert are continuing to drop.

That’s according to the University of Saskatchewan which has been studying wastewater in the community to determine how prevalent the virus is.

In their weekly report, researchers note levels have reportedly dropped by 10 per cent. This is the third straight week P.A. has seen a decrease.

The Omicron variant continues to account for the majority of the levels, currently sitting at more than 96 per cent.

Just under three per cent of Omicron levels have been determined to be the subvariant BA.2 which is believed to be more contagious. This new strain has been popping up across Canada since the start of the year.

Meanwhile, North Battleford is seeing an increase in its COVID levels.

Researchers found a 35 per cent rise in volume in the city’s wastewater when compared to the previous week.

Just like in P.A. Omicron continues to account for over 90 per cent of levels, however, the BA.2 Omicron subvariant appears to be the dominant strain.

The U of S researchers added each city may see changes in their active case totals, though it depends on whether people get tested and report their results to the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
