RCMP Report Pt. 2: Tasers deployed, sword found

Mar 4, 2022 | 5:00 AM

Police in the Battlefords dealt with multiple assault cases, including two instances where the use of a Taser was required.

A call came early in the morning on Feb. 23 from the 900 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford where a man was reportedly causing a disturbance and threatening numerous people. He was located and arrested for uttering threats and proceeded to engage in a fight with the responding members, and was eventually taken into custody after a Taser was deployed.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said it took multiple efforts to apprehend the accused 40-year-old Jim Stone.

“The Taser was deployed three times we were able to successfully apprehend him,” Tremblay said. “But he wasn’t injured during the arrest.”

Stone made his first appearance in court later that same day on three counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and failing to comply with a probation order.

Another case of assault occurred on the same street two days later, where a man reportedly became upset at another male and ran into him. The accused, 34-year-old Martin Night, was arrested Monday evening and has been charged with assault and uttering threats. No injuries were reported and Night appeared in court on Tuesday.

Sword possession

After a report of an erratic driver, police completed a vehicle stop Saturday morning on Wearing Road. During the stop, officers noticed a sword in the vehicle prompting a search that resulted in the seizure of cocaine and a significant amount of cash. The driver of the vehicle, who was driving with a license, assaulted an officer on scene in an attempt to evade arrest.

Once members used a Taser to subdue him, 38-year-old Cody Caron was arrested and remanded on multiple charges. These include assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of cocaine and four counts of failing to comply with previous release orders.

“He was also only subdued after multiple uses of a Taser,” Tremblay said.

Caron made his first appearance in court on Feb. 28.

Other assault cases

Police are investigating an assault against an employee of a business on Carlton Trail sometime between 6:30-6:55 p.m. on Feb. 24. The employee confronted an adult male and adult female on the grounds of possible theft when the male suspect allegedly struck the employee and the pair then fled in a grey Chevrolet Silverado.

Tremblay said the investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been identified at this time.

“They were both wearing masks and it was a limited description, but it probably would’ve been a noticeable event if anybody had happened to be in the area,” he said. “[Someone] might be able to shed some light.”

Another assault occurred earlier that day at a residence on the 1600 block of 104th Street where an altercation between two males known to each other resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old male. He was later released pending a future court date on one count of assault and the victim did not sustain any significant injuries during incident.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
