Honour Our Veterans

Fred Light Museum taking applications for veterans banner program

Mar 4, 2022 | 5:00 PM

The Fred Light Museum “Honour Our Veterans” banner program is now accepting new applications for the 2022 program.

This is the fourth year the program has been offered.

“We are very pleased how this program has been accepted by the residents of Battleford and rural area,” Fred Light Museum manager Bernadette Leslie said.

Anyone who is interested in honouring a loved one who served can submit their applications from now until the end of August. The forms are available through the Fred Light Museum, either in person, by phone at 306-937-7111, or by email at: flmuseum@battleford.ca

The “Honour our Veterans” banner program in Battleford is being organized by the museum in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 in Battleford and the Town of Battleford.

To date, a total of 97 veterans have been honoured in the program. The museum board will accept up to 50 new applications for the 2022 program on a first-come, first-served basis similar to previous years. The cost of the banners is $250 each to run for at least five years in the program.

“We are going to hang all the banners each year as long as they last,” Leslie said.

Each of the banners features a veteran who was at one time a permanent resident of the Battlefords and surrounding area.

All banners will be installed along the streets in the Battleford community for the 2022 program, running from mid-October about three weeks prior to Remembrance Day to mid-November.

“They’ll be re-hung on the Main Street [22nd Street] in Battleford, and on other streets,” Leslie said.

She added the museum board appreciates the town’s Public Works manager Eric Bilanski and his team for all their help over the years installing the banners.

Leslie also thanked the Town of Battleford mayor and council for their full support, along with help from Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 for supplying photos and information for a number of veterans featured in the program.
