SaskPower seeking 4 per cent rate increases for 2022 and ’23

Saskatchewan residents will be paying more for their power if a SaskPower application to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel is approved.

SaskPower announced in a media release Friday that it’s seeking rate increases of four per cent in 2022 and another four per cent in 2023.

The Crown corporation noted it hasn’t increased its rates since 2018.

If the application is approved, the average household would pay $5 more for power starting on Sept. 1 of this year and another $5 on April 1, 2023.

“SaskPower is committed to providing stable and reliable power to our customers at an affordable rate, and we’ve worked hard to avoid rate increases in recent years,” Troy King, SaskPower’s interim president and CEO, said in the release.

“Today, SaskPower requires additional funding to increase renewable generation, modernize the power system and ensure a sustainable future for us all.”

The company also revealed it’s looking to make a change to its rate design methodology. The change would only affect customers who pay separate demand and energy charges; residential customers and most farm and small commercial customers won’t be affected.

SaskPower’s rate application is to be posted to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel’s website in the coming days.
