Town sends condolences to Mahons and community of Castor

Feb 8, 2022 | 2:23 PM

During Monday’s council meeting, Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie offered the town’s sympathies to families who lost loved ones recently.

Elizabeth “Betty” Mahon passed away on Feb. 5 at the age of 85 years. The beloved resident was the mother of former mayor Derek Mahon.

The Mahon family owns Battleford business Sanburn Construction Ltd., a long-time contractor of the town as well the city for water and sewer projects, Leslie noted.

Many members of council expressed their sympathies to the Mahon family.

The mayor also extended his condolences to the Town of Castor southeast of Edmonton, Alta., that experienced a tragedy this past weekend. One of the Castor Fire Department trucks rolled over on an extremely icy highway on Feb. 4, while heading to a collision. Firefighter Stephen Rayfield died in the line of duty and Castor Fire Chief Patrick Kelly was injured in the incident, the Town of Castor said on its Facebook Page.

“Personal and deep to my heart, the community of Castor lost a firefighter on the weekend, last Friday night, and as well their fire chief was seriously injured while responding, trying to save somebody else in a motor vehicle incident,” Leslie said. “Thoughts and prayers go out to the community of Castor and the families affected by this unfortunate incident. As we all know, we cherish our firefighters very much in this community, and it would pain me to have to deal with that. Condolences to all of Castor.”
