McMorris advances to Winter Olympics slopestyle final

Regina snowboarder Mark McMorris will have a chance to add to his Winter Olympic slopestyle medal haul.

The 28-year-old finished second in qualifying Sunday at the Beijing Games, posting a score of 83.30 points on his second of two runs. He trailed only Yiming Su of China, who put up a score of 86.80.

McMorris won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi and the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang.

The top 12 scores after the first two runs of qualifying advanced to Sunday night’s final. It’s slated to begin at 10 p.m., Regina time.

Sebastien Toutant (L’Assomption, Que.) and Max Parrot (Bromont, Que.) also qualified for the final, finishing eighth and 10th respectively in qualifying.

Darcy Sharpe (Comox, B.C.) was 23rd in qualifying and didn’t advance to the final.

In the women’s slopestyle final, Laurie Blouin (Quebec City) finished fourth.

As of Sunday morning, Canada had won two medals at the Games — a silver in men’s moguls by Mikael Kingsbury and a bronze in the women’s 3,000-metre long-track speed skating event by Isabelle Weidemann.

Curling: In the mixed doubles competition, John Morris (Canmore, Alta.) and Rachel Homan (Ottawa) need a victory in their last round-robin game later Sunday against Italy to reach the playoffs.

Canada had a 5-3 round-robin record after splitting its first two games Sunday. Morris and Homan beat the Czech Republic 7-5 before losing 10-8 to Australia.

The Canadians were tied with Great Britain and Norway at 5-3, with Sweden still in contention at 5-4. Italy topped the standings at 8-0.

The semifinals are set for early Monday, with the medal games slated for Tuesday.

Figure skating: Canada was fourth in the team event standings after Sunday’s action.

Madeline Schizas (Oakville, Ont.) was third in the women’s short program and Roman Sadovsky (Vaughan, Ont.) was fifth in the men’s free skate.

The pairs free skate is set for later Sunday, with the ice dance and women’s free skates set for Monday.

Canada had 30 points after Sunday’s early events, trailing teams from Russia (45 points), the United States (42) and Japan (39) in the standings.

Alpine skiing: The men’s downhill was rescheduled until Sunday evening. James Crawford (Toronto), Brodie Seger (North Vancouver) and Broderick Thompson (Whistler, B.C.) are Canada’s representatives.

Cross-country skiing: In the men’s 15 kilometre plus 15km skiathlon, Olivier Leveille (Sherbrooke, Que.) was 31st and Antoine Cyr (Gatineau, Que.) was 42nd.

Freestyle skiing: Chloe Dufour-Lapointe (Montreal) finished ninth in the women’s moguls final. Sofiane Gagnon (Whistler, B.C.) was 12th and Justine Dufour-Lapointe (Montreal) placed 20th.

Luge: Reid Watts (Whistler, B.C.) finished 17th in the men’s singles.

Ski jumping: Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes (Calgary) was 16th in the men’s normal hill individual final.

Speed skating: Ted-Jan Bloemen (Calgary) finished 10th in the men’s 5,000 metres, the event in which he won silver at the 2018 Games.
