NB Mayor thanks Métis Nation—Saskatchewan for support

The Mayor of North Battleford gave a special thank you to Métis Nation—Saskatchewan (MN–S) at city council’s meeting this week for offering support to the local community.

David Gillan said he sent a letter of appreciation to the organization’s president Glen McCallum for their donations MN–S made to the Battlefords Emergency Shelter, now known as Miwasin Kikinaw, the local Food Bank, the Battlefords Indian and Métis Friendship Centre and the Battlefords Interval House in 2021 and during the Christmas season.

“Métis Nation—Saskatchewan made a very significant donation to four organizations in our city,” he said. “I thought it was only proper to say thank you for all the support they provide our city, especially around Christmas when there is such a high need.”

Gillan also thanked MN–S for the hard work of their staff, as well as especially Christena Konrad (MN-S Housing Director), whom he said is “forever helping us with navigating funding with regards to our homeless shelter,” and looking at the homelessness issue in the Battlefords area community.

“In public here, I want to again acknowledge and thank Métis Nation—Saskatchewan for everything they do for our city,” he said.

MN–S told battlefordsNOW they are committed to serving those in need.

“Métis Nation–Saskatchewan is proud to work with our partners for community responses to issues affecting our most vulnerable citizens,” the organization said in a statement. “For the past year, MN–S has been a part of a task force on homelessness in several communities, including the Battlefords.”

The group said areas of food security, housing, and mental wellness have suffered during the pandemic especially.

“The homelessness population is growing due to COVID impacts,” the organization said. “We do what we can for the community and our Métis citizens, and we encourage others to also respond with compassion and generosity.”
