Beaver Blues to welcome Meota to town for Hockey Day in Canada

Nothing says Hockey Day in Canada like a friendly rivalry night hockey game.

The Battlefords Beaver Blues will welcome the Meota Combines to town for an all-local senior hockey showdown this Saturday, to celebrate Hockey Day in Canada with some Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League (SPHL) action.

“It’s the perfect way to kind of finish off the regular season as things wind down ahead of the playoffs,” Player/manager of the Combines, Kyle Gregoire, said. “We’re both kind of one of the top seeds, so it should be a pretty exciting game, and should make for a great event.”

The Combines enter play Saturday in top spot overall of the SPHL standings with a perfect 12-0 record, while the Beaver Blues sit third at 8-2-1 with a game Friday against Maymont.

In addition to featuring two of the top teams overall, the weekend will also serve as an opportunity to highlight and contribute to the game of hockey at the grassroots level in the community.

With a number of raffle prizes and guaranteed $500 Kramer Trailer Sales 50/50, the Beaver Blues will donate 100 per cent of proceeds from the raffle fundraiser, along with their portion of the 50-50 to Colby’s Kids; a program designed to introduce the next generation of young kids to the sport.

Player/manager with the Beaver Blues, Kody Wolff said the team is happy to be able to do something special for others with the occasion.

“We got some generous donations from some different businesses and donors around town for raffle prizes, and in giving back we’re trying to encourage that next generation,” Wolff said. “Hockey’s very important in Canada and that’s why we celebrate Hockey Day, so giving kids the opportunity to play hockey is huge and obviously just a feel-good way to give back.”

Sticking with the community and grassroots theme, the opening ceremonies will also feature a special puck drop with a couple representatives from the local U9 Sharks hockey team, while members of the U9 Barons will also take part in a scrimmage during the first intermission.

Saturday’s game will begin at 8 p.m. at Battleford Arena.
