Second North Battleford Scouts celebrate season with Winter Carnival

Jan 25, 2022 | 12:51 PM

The second North Battleford Scouts are making the most of the outdoors this winter, as they recently held a special Winter Carnival to take part in a number of seasonal activities.

Featuring events from snowshoeing and tobogganing, to tug of war and winter hiking, the main attraction also saw Loon Lake’s Conner Family Racing & Tours take part, bringing their dog sleds for the youth and their families to experience as well.

“It was kind of a come-and-go event as we have a pretty good sized group right now, so families would come on the hour for about three hours, and it turned out great,” Group commissioner with the scouts, Sarah Thompson said. “We had about 66 participants and a few people from the public as well who stopped by.”

The day also featured a ‘make-your-own’ maple syrup toffee stop, where participants were invited to take part in the process of boiling maple syrup then rolling it in snow, which causes it to become a sweet toffee treat on a stick; as well as hotdog roasting over a campfire.

The Winter Carnival was an event for all scouts, from ages 5-13, and their families. In addition to participating in the day’s events, the older members of the group also helped to guide the younger ones through the activities.

Thompson said events like the weekend’s are as valuable as ever at this time, as a way for the next generation to come together and make new friends in a unique social environment.

“It’s very important for the youth to have that connection outside of school, especially because a lot of them are being home schooled right now,” she said. “Having this extra-curricular activity is just another way they can connect with school mates and make friends with kids from other schools. It’s a lot of fun and any kind of socialization like that is great and really just lifts the spirits of all involved.”

The local Winter Carnival was held in lead up to Scouts Canada’s Claim the Flame.

Claim the Flame will serve as a sort of “Scoutdoor Winter Games,” which will begin Monday, Jan. 31, and run over a similar period to the Olympic Winter Games. It will feature various Olympic-themed activities and ideas for Scouts groups across the country to follow along with and take part in over the weeks to follow.

The programming sent out by Scouts Canada includes a diversity of activity ideas for at home during virtual meetings, or when together outdoors at Scout meetings in-person.
