Coming off back-to-back wins in their home-and-home with Kindersley over the weekend, the Battlefords North Stars have seen a pair of players recognized for their performances in the SJHL Players of the Week.

Goaltender, Lowen Kenyon was named SJHL Goaltender of the Week, while forward, Holden Doell was dubbed MVP of the Week.

Kenyon opened the weekend with a bang for the North Stars, stopping all 28 Klippers’ shots he faced in Kindersley Friday, to lead the team to a perfect 3-0 win over their division rivals.

For Kenyon, the feat marked his first career shutout in the junior ranks, a milestone the 17-year-old said he was happy to be able to share with family in attendance, also giving credit to his teammates.

“It was pretty special, having my family in attendance making the trip and I thought the boys battled hard,” Kenyon said. “[There was] a lot of perimeter shots but I came up when I had to, so that was good.”

In eight games this season, Kenyon is 4-1-1, with a 1.87 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.

MVP of the Week, Holden Doell

Forward, Holden Doell scored the OT winner versus Kindersley Saturday, while picking up an assist as well, to lead the team to a 5-4 victory in extra time.

Down 4-2 with under five minutes to go in the third, prior to their comeback, Doell said following his OT winner, the team’s ability to battle back speaks to their resiliency.

“It’s a special group here this year, so we knew we were going to battle back and tie the game,” Doell said. “While it was nice to score the overtime winner, I’ve gotta give credit to Jake [Southgate] and Ninch (Ryland McNinch) as well for the two tying goals. It was a crazy game, but it was awesome.”

For Doell, the multi-point performance is only the latest in what has been a rookie season for the books. In 30 games with the team this year, Doell has scored eight goals and sits fifth overall in team scoring with 27 points.

Also recognized in the Players of the Week were Humboldt’s Noah Barlage, who took home Defenceman of the Week honours, and Nipawin’s Harmon Laser-Hume, who was named Rookie of the Week.

The North Stars will return to action Friday night in Wilcox, against the division rival, Notre Dame Hounds. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
