Concern for Youth
How does a community help shape a community? By working together. And most importantly, by being there for the youth in the community. As the song says, the children are our future, and a community needs to be there to help them lead the way.
Battlefords Concern for Youth is a non-profit charitable organization providing outreach and mentorship services in the community. Responding to escalating gang activity, homelessness, and youth crime in 1989, it was believed the issues surrounding Battlefords youth were worsening due to the lack of community involvement and a lack of activities for youth to take part. So, the community came together to form Concern for Youth.
Their mission is simple:
To use a proactive approach to assist youth in making responsible decisions, identify the needs of youth, act as a liaison between youth and community programming, and raise the profile of youth issues in the community.
How does Battlefords Concern for Youth do it?
Their Youth Mentorship Service is derived from a partnership with the Ministry of Social Services (MSS) with trained adult mentors partnering with one on one or small groups ages 5-19. They participate in activities that enhance self-esteem, self-regulation, and social skills within the community.
