RCMP Report Pt. 1: Assault suspect arrested for knife incident

A 35 year-old man in Battleford was arrested on Jan. 9, following an assault involving a knife.

The detachment received a call that morning from a residence on the 300 block of 32^nd St. in Battleford, reporting a male suffering from several stab wounds. Police located the 42 year old victim with injuries to his legs and torso and immediately arrested the suspect on scene. The victim was subsequently transported to hospital for treatment, from which he has since been released.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay told battlefordsNOW the incident began as a family argument.

“The injuries were serious, but [the victim] will recover,” he said.

Vernon Firingstoney is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of uttering threats. He was held in custody and appeared in court on Monday Jan. 10.

There were 25 assault investigations this past week, out of 473 total calls for service. In one of those cases, police were called to the 900 block of 102^nd St. in North Battleford on Jan. 6, where 27 year-old Kyle Sayers was arrested for reportedly assaulting another male with a fire extinguisher. He’s charged with assault with a weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Tremblay said the two were known to each other and added that the victim was fine.

“Fortunately the person didn’t sustain any injuries and was able to control [the accused] until the police came and took him into custody,” he said.

As a result of the incident and charges, Sayers was held in custody and appeared in court on Jan. 7.

Police also charged a 51 year-old male with assault and resisting arrest in Battleford on Jan. 9, for reportedly assaulting a man in his 70’s and briefly struggling with members on the scene. He was released from custody and appears in court Feb. 14.

Other calls for service

Police had seven missing persons reported in the last seven days. Two of those cases are active.

There were also 28 Mental Health investigations, 25 traffic collisions, 16 break and enters, 17 vehicle thefts, eight various traffic charges and two individuals charged with impaired driving.
