City thanks citizens, first responders in apt. building rescue
North Battleford Mayor David Gillan took the opportunity to thank not only the firefighters who helped people escape last week’s apartment building fire, but also the citizens who assisted.
Police and fire crews responded to the blaze at 1441 102nd St. in North Battleford at about 1:25 a.m on Jan. 3. Residents evacuated the building, including several that were taken to hospital with injuries. In total up to around 40 adults and up to 10 children were displaced as a result of the fire.
During Monday’s council meeting, the mayor reiterated the city’s appreciation to the first responders, including the RCMP, CSOs, ambulance attendants and of course, the firefighters from the City of North Battleford, the Town of Battleford, and the RM of North Battleford, “who all came together at a late hour in cold temperatures to try to help those poor people who were in a very serious situation, with some even on their balconies looking for help to get out of the building,” he said.
He also extended his gratitude to the private citizens who braved the elements as well, “to come out and help those poor people who were stranded, and helping our firefighters to address such a tragic situation.”
