North Stars fall 6-2 in Humboldt

Jan 8, 2022 | 11:14 PM

Coming off back to back wins to open the new year, the Battlefords North Stars suffered their first loss of 2022 Saturday night, as the team fell 6-1 to the Broncos in Humboldt.

Keiton Klein and Tynan Ewart scored for the Stars in the loss, while Ulrik Roussel made 14 saves on 18 shots-against in his return to the lineup, before being replaced by Lowen Kenyon who stopped 16 of 18.

For Humboldt, Alex Morozoff and Rhett Gibson picked up a pair of goals each to lead their team to victory, while Cody Hough and Lucas Ceccarelli also added a goal each and Rayce Ramsay stopped 25 of 27 shots.

Trading a goal each within the first two minutes of action, Morozoff’s first of the night opened the scoring just 1:09 into the contest, before Klein answered back with a tally of his own, to knot the score 1-1 just 30 seconds later.

For Klein, the goal served as his fourth of the season, and third in his last two games.

Gibson’s first of the night made it 2-1 Broncos five minutes later, a lead the team would take to the first intermission.

In the second, Humboldt pulled away with three unanswered, as both Gibson and Morozoff added their second of the night, and Hough joined the scoring as well to stretch the lead to 5-1 through 40 minutes.

Ceccarelli made it 6-1 Broncos just over a minute into the third; a lead that would hold until the final 21 seconds, when Ewart’s second of the weekend and fourth of the year made it 6-2.

With the loss, the Stars are now 21-10-5 on the season, and remain in fourth overall of the league standings.

With Tuesday’s game versus Nipawin postponed, the Stars will now get a full week off, before returning to action next weekend for a back-to-back with Flin Flon, Saturday and Sunday in North Battleford.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will begin Saturday with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m., and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
