Omicron found in P.A. wastewater, no levels in North Battleford

It appears the Omicron variant may have finally made its way to Prince Albert.

That’s according to the University of Saskatchewan which has been studying wastewater in the community to determine how prevalent COVID-19 is.

They note samples that were taken on Dec. 15th and 17th tested positive for Omicron, however, the levels were just high enough for them to detect so the U of S is cautiously observing the data.

As of Dec. 23rd, the last day the province of Saskatchewan updated COVID numbers before the holidays, there have been 148 cases of the newest variant.

Only 27 are 100 per cent confirmed, while the other 121 remain probable cases.

The province has not said which region these cases are located in.

Data from the U of S’s wastewater study, which has also been taking samples in other cities, shows the majority of COVID levels found in Saskatoon are the Omicron variant. It’s increased by over 800 per cent from their previous weekly report.

North Battleford, the other city in the study, continues to see no levels of Omicron.

Meanwhile, the overall COVID levels found in P.A. and North Battleford are down.

This means the daily case numbers may start decreasing in the near future.
