City approves zoning amendment for outfitter lodge use

Dec 15, 2021 | 5:33 PM

A proposed outfitter lodge, to accommodate hunters and fishers, on the outskirts of North Battleford appears to becoming a little closer to reality.

City administration previously indicated the business, Feathered Fowl Outfitters Inc., hopes to build a 10 to 15 room lodge for hunters’ accommodations. If approved, the site would be located along Railway Avenue West, at the north end of the city, within city limits.

There were no objections at the city’s public hearing this week related to amending its zoning bylaw to accommodate this type of use for the area.

“Having a hunting lodge in this location is not anticipated to have a negative impact on the future land use, or have any negative impacts to current uses since it is fairly secluded,” city assistant director of corporate services Ryan Mackrell said in his prior report.

Council passed an amendment to the zoning bylaw to allow for an outfitter lodge as a discretionary use for the city’s Future Urban Development District. An outfitter lodge is described as a recreational facility providing outfitting services by a licensed outfitter. This type of facility would offer accommodations for storing equipment, cleaning or freezing game or fish as part of the service.

“We didn’t receive any complaints with the modification to our zoning bylaw,” Mayor David Gillan told battlefordsNOW. “I think whatever creative ways we can develop our city, and develop and grow our business-base I’m really happy to support.”

Before the applicant would be able to proceed with the proposed facility, council would need to approve the specific project, which will be the next step in the process.

“It will come back for an actual application for the lodge,” Gillan said. “But now at least it is listed inside the zoning bylaw, so it can be considered by council.”
