Police looking for victim of assault in Battleford

Dec 14, 2021 | 2:28 PM

Battlefords RCMP is investigating the circumstances of a reported assault in the Town of Battleford that was caught on video.

Shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, police received a complaint that an assault with a weapon was occurring in the parking lot of Buster’s Pizza and Donair off Highway 4.

A suspect was found and arrested a short time later without incident, though police say no weapon was found at the time.

The video circulating on social media depicting the assault was partially confirmed by the RCMP. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the investigation is ongoing, but police felt it best to put out a release, given how quickly the video was spreading online and the number of inquiries coming in from the public and media outlets.

“We believe that was an accurate representation of the incident reported on Sunday,” he said. “The arrest was made within minutes of the complaint coming in.”

Tremblay added they’re hoping someone who sees the video may recognize the victim.

“We’re reasonably satisfied that the person we had in custody was one of the individuals involved, but at this point, we still haven’t identified who the victim of the attack was.”

As of Dec. 12, no one has been identified or come forward as the victim. Tremblay said hospital checks were also negative and there were no similar reported assaults nearby.

“It’s our belief that it’s likely the victim didn’t sustain any injuries of any significance,” he said. “But we can’t know until we’re able to identify him and speak to him.”

The suspect was released from custody and no charges have been laid at this time.

Anyone with any information on the assault captured on video is urged to call the Battlefords RCMP, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
