Dec 10, 2021 | 12:55 PM

After weeks of deliberation and hundreds and thousands of votes, the results of the 2022 Best of the Best (BOB) Awards are in!

For the fifth year in a row, battlefordsNOW readership had the opportunity to chime in on the best businesses, people, locations events and more in the Battlefords region. The contest is designed to recognize local businesses for their work and dedication in the community.

This year, battlefordsNOW sales manager Kelly Bitner said there were more than 6,000 nominations and nearly 24 thousand page views, which he noted is encouraging.

“It shows that people are participating, there’s lots of action and lots of people want to have their say,” he said.

This year had 192 categories and took several months to complete. Nominations began in October and the voting phase opened Nov. 15.

“It changes each year, sometimes, we’ll combine categories when we have similar winners or add new ones,” Bitner said. “We like the categories where a lot of different people can win, like best local business. Things where it’s not just that category, where everyone has a shot.”

Some of the big winners in popular categories included:

  • Best Gas Station: Co-op
  • Best Breakfast: Country Cuisine
  • Best Local Band: Zayda
  • Best Radio Station: 93.3 The Rock
  • Best Ethnic Food: The Beaver Grill Express
  • Best Pizza: Swan Pizza
  • Best Kept Local Secret: BohemianSense

“There’s some new businesses that have been highlighted, which is exciting,” Bitner said. “Whenever businesses are new to town, it’s great to get them recognition.”

Armoury Brewing Company was one of the biggest winners, with Best Nightlife Venue, Best Bar/Pub, Best Locally Owned Business/Shop, Best Place to take a Date and Best Tourist Attraction.

For the second straight year there was no gala to usher in winners due to provincial COVID-19 restrictions. Bitner added that it’s especially important to have the awards when people are unable to gather.

“It’s just important to have something to lift the spirits of people in the community, whether it’s business, organizations or individuals,” he said. “I think it’s important to recognize what we have [here] that’s great and encourage people doing a great job to keep doing it.”

Recipients can find their certificates by heading to the BOB Awards page to download or print a copy they can display in their businesses or show off to friends online
